Hydros has published a COWI report summarising the results of the monitoring well drilling project on Hafnarsandur, laying the foundation for structured and long-term groundwater monitoring in the area.
The report describes the execution of drilling works, the location and depth of wells, the geological structure of the area, and the initial measurements carried out following the completion of the works. Measurements of groundwater levels, temperature, and electrical conductivity provide important initial insight into groundwater conditions and the interaction between freshwater and seawater on Hafnarsandur.
Hydros is now working on the next phase of the project, which involves investing in fixed monitoring equipment to ensure regular, coordinated, and long-term measurements. Such monitoring is a prerequisite for tracking the development of the groundwater resource over time, identifying potential changes, and supporting informed decision-making on groundwater use and protection.
Groundwater monitoring serves the public interest and does not only relate to the operations of individual stakeholders, but also to the long-term security and protection of the municipality’s water resources. With the publication of the COWI report, an important step is taken towards transparent, responsible, and sustainable groundwater management in Ölfus.
